Babies Used as Decoys in New York Drug-Smuggling Operation(New York) — One of the leaders of a major drug smuggling ring that used babies as decoys is going to be spending the next decade behind bars. The sentence was handed down just yesterday. And today New York customs inspectors and federal prosecutors are talking about how this crime is unlike any other ring they've come across.
Imagine an international drug smuggling ring so brazen that babies were used as decoys, bringing in millions of dollars in drugs. The scheme used couriers posing as mothers with babies to smuggle kilos of cocaine and heroine. The hiding place was cans of baby formula. And what makes the crimes even more appalling, their own mothers and fathers rented 12 of the babies to the drug couriers.
Scott Levine, Assistant U.S. Attorney, Chicago, Illinois: "A heroine addict is the courier. The heroin addict leaves the baby with a stranger while the heroine addict goes to score some heroin to feed her habit."
In Chicago, two of the ringleaders, Celina Johnson and Orville Wilson lined up couriers and babies to take with them from the city's depressed South Side.
The plan was to smuggle the drugs into the U.S. from Panama and Jamaica. And who were the couriers? Most were drug addicts but some were the babies own mothers.
Elaine Austin, Used Her Baby As A Drug Decoy: "I put my life in danger and my whole family's life in danger, just because I wanted to make some money."
In all 49 defendants plead guilty including those parents who rented their babies to be used as drug decoys. Amazingly Erica Howard, a courier who used her own son as a decoy says she's grateful to New York authorities arresting her.
New York prosecutors say when re-packaged one of those formula cans filled with cocaine has a street value of $100 to $200,000 dollars.
