New York: Brooklyn Cop Saved By Bulletproof Vest(NEW YORK) A man shot and wounded a police officer who tried to arrest him during a suspected drug purchase in Brooklyn and later shot himself dead, police said.
Officer Patrick Caprice, 42, was in stable condition early Thursday at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center. His bulletproof vest likely saved him, police said.
The violence began at about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, when Caprice and his partner allegedly saw the man buying marijuana on Grafftan Street in the Brownsville section, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said at a news conference.
The man fled in his car and the officers pursued him. He ran several red lights before stopping at Dumont Avenue and Bristol Street, where he opened fire on the officers from his car, striking Caprice in the torso.
The man then got out of his car and continued to fire on Caprice, Kelly said. Caprice returned fire, shooting the suspect in the hip and arm.
The man jumped back into his car and sped off, stopping several blocks later when he crashed into livery cab, police said. The driver of the cab was treated for minor injuries and released.
The suspect continued to flee on foot, taking refuge in a friend's apartment at 131 Belmont Ave.
When police found him there about two hours later, they heard a single shot inside the apartment. They found the man inside with a gunshot wound to his head; he was treated at the scene but died shortly thereafter.
Caprice is a 14-year veteran of the NYPD, Kelly said.
